Koreader lets you define an image to use, when there is no "bookcover" image or when you have unchecked the "Use bookcover for screensaver" menu option. If you define a folder for that advanced option it will randomly use an image from that folder. If nothing is defined and no bookcover image is included in the ebook file, or the option is unselected, then a message box will pop up with "Suspended" (this can be changed or disabled). Check out the KOReader forum.

The launcher/utility program Kobo Start Menu (KSM8) includes a "Power Off" function that you can also define your own image/images.

There are also hacks to the stock Kobo software to add a random screensaver.
