I always keep mine on and not in airplane mode. At the house I have Wifi and I never see the 3G symbol. When I'm away I do see the 3G symbol and it does use the battery more.
If yours is using a lot of battery when you're near a Wifi router and connected I wonder if you might have a faulty device.
