Have you looked at the actual changes to the DeDRM tools?
tl;dr
It doesn't really look like Amazon was trying to break the tools. It
looks like this was a very minor change actually. Sometimes applications reshuffle or tack on new fields to their settings.
They might not have actually realized the tools would be affected, assuming they knew or cared about the tools anyway.
