Is there any way to get an image with a previous software version to test my theory?
Before trying to re-image your uSD card, I'd suggest doing a factory reset, connect to your computer and let the Kobo desktop application run through it's setup to the point when you are told it's okay to eject your ereader. At this point, close the Kobo application, browse to the .kobo directory on the internal storage of your Kobo, delete the KoboRoot.tgz, manifest.md5sum files and the upgrade directory (the upgrade directory may not be present). Replace the deleted items with those from the .zip file you downloaded from links found in the Direct Links to Kobo Firmware thread -- pick the firmware version you wish to downgrade to from there. Safely eject your Kobo and let the upgrade procedure run.

Please note that if you use WiFi, your Kobo can and will automatically download the latest firmware upgrade so leave WiFi turned off. There is a patch to prevent firmware updates from happening over wireless (Block WiFi Firmware Upgrade) in GeoffR's patches but I've never used it so can't say as to how efficacious it is.

Good luck!
