Unless you have taken the KK apart and looked at the back side of the screen to see if the glass layer is broken, you can't rule out screen damage just by the front appearance. I've worked on many of these where the image on the front was perfect, but frozen. Then I would take the kindle apart and find the under glass layer shattered. Sometimes shattered glass will let the front image update, and then you see a broken image. But sometimes a shattered glass will not let the front image update and it remains on the last image shown.
