No problem here. Just to check - do you have any issues with your hands or your co-ordination? Are your hands unusually dry or calloused, such that capacitive touch screens and you may not always get along? Have you tried using a capacitive stylus?
For the first issue, are you long-pressing for long enough for the menu to come up, without letting go or moving? For the second, all I've ever had to do is swipe straight across, forward or back. Make sure you're not swiping diagonally at all. Be absolutely sure that you're not inadvertently touching the screen elsewhere at all so that it detects a double-touch and gets confused.
If it was a different Kobo I'd also say "clean it, especially the nooks and crannies, with compressed air" but the Aura has a flush screen.
Have you done the usual generic trouble-shooting steps: fully power off the device and back on, etc?
