I download all my various Gmail and Yahoo emails into my email client on my PC, I rarely ever visit the email sites directly unless I need to change the password. I'm sure they could still trace back where they get downloaded to though.
But again, any site you click on has your IP, so I don't really see the difference or any concern that Kobo has your email that might possibly trace back to your IP as well.
