on a more trivial scale, she used to heat the house by turning on the heat at maximum and then *also* turning on the oven at maximum and leaving the oven door open. i would get home and the place would be like a sauna. it was probably 40° in the living room. by the time i got from the front door to the kitchen (to turn off the damned oven) i would be sweating (even though i was shedding layers of clothing at every step), and it wasn't that long a walk.
