As to the recommendation for safe ejecting, it all really depends on what is happening. If you pull the cable out while the data is being written to the device, there will be problems. If you wait for a few minutes after copying those files, it will probably be OK as any caches will probably be flushed. The safe eject makes sure no device is currently using it and should do a flush for any cache involved and make sure the file system is closed cleanly. Nine times out of ten, just pulling the cable out will be OK. It's the tenth that causes the problem.
