I would definitely suggest creating a directory (aka folder) to save your sideloaded ebooks into.

Calibre will handle managing your sideloaded ebooks on your Kobo. Personally, I find Calibre one of the most useful programs I have.

It is true this was needed up to windows 2000 but from windows xp windows will shut down a connection to a usb device when its not needed and will connect to it again when needed. In windows 2000 and lower this wasn't the case so potentially if you pulled out the usb device while windows was just writing to it there was a danger of corrupting the file system. Windows 10 doesn't even have a safe removal option as far as I know it.

Just checked on Win10 x64 and safely eject is still there. It's also there in a VM with the 14271 preview build. My personal experience is that I have tried to safely eject devices on several occasions and been informed the device could not be safely ejected at this time. For my Kobo, I've been using the Smart Eject plugin for Calibre.
