And the most likely cause/easiest way to avoid getting a corruption of your database is to make sure you use the "SAFELY REMOVE HARDWARE" option to stop the device before unplugging it from the USB on your computer. Most devices and USB sticks don't require this these days, but the Kobo e-readers are prone to errors if you just pull it out without stopping it.
