That may or may not be required, depending on both your distribution and the contents of your /etc/fstab.
Notes:
The keys generated live in the ~/.ssh directory.
The setting of ~ on the local machine has nothing to do with the setting of ~ on the remote machine.
I.E: You don't have to be 'root' on the local machine to sign into the Kindle as 'root'.
The sudo command (pre-setup on most distributions) will give you 'root' privledges for a limited amount of time.
