Kobo Mini how/where to transfer free epubs via USB?

How do I copy my own epubs from the computer into Mini?

Mini is my 4th ereader but I am stuck on getting epubs into the device.

What I've done:
Created a Kobo account (no payment information yet)
Connected to my wifi, Kobo Mini updated itself and restarted now running Software Version 3.4.1

Read: https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Talk:Kobo_eReader

Connected via USB and copied 3 different epubs into
  • \.kobo
  • \.kobo\kepub (seems there are some encrypted epubs here)
  • \.kobo\Kobo (most logical)

I still do not see any books in Library.

Library Settings are:
Only show downloaded items OFF
Show Thumbnails ON
Book Management:
Downloaded Kobo Books 0
Downloaded previews 0
Imported Items 0

All I get is option to buy books from Kobo store when I add
Pressing Sync seems to do nothing besides forever spinning progress.

What is the missing step?

PS I am hoping I do not have to install a Kobo specific software to my computer to transfer files via USB
