The main problem is that the parents of all four major Kindle alternatives have other interests with much higher priority than consumer ebooks. I'm pretty sure Amazon has other interests as well. Ebooks must be a rounding error on their accounts.
I'd have thought kobo would be the bigger threat with rakuten being more competition to the "everything everywhere" store. Well, if they can ever sort out their search algorithm, can't find a damn thing on play nowadays.
