Not sure about Sony, but for Kindles, you can add as many dictionaries as you'd like, and use them all with your books. You can only have one set as the default, but when you look up a word from within a book, it looks in the default dictionary, and there is a dropdown so you can choose to get a definition from other dictionaries as well. For instance, my default is The New Oxford American Dictionary, but I may occasionally want to look up a certain word using a different dictionary. (like if I am reading with wifi off and find a word in german, I can choose the german-english translation dictionary from the dropdown list)

If for some reason I decide that the many dictionaries that come with my Kindle aren't enough, I can buy more and add them to my Kindle, and use them in addition to the ones that come with it.
