No biggies for folks with Nook HD's, HD+'s or newer since they have Google Play access, but those with the Nook Color or Nook Tablet will be out of luck for any kind of future apps.
On another note, they are also killing off the Nook Video service.

I thought I read somewhere that NCs and NTs were going to receive an OTA software update that gave them access to the Google Play App Store.
Since, unlike NOOK Store apps, Google Play apps installed on a NOOK HD/HD+ cannot be moved to the cloud or archived, to conserve on-device storage space, then I hope the NOOK Division will offer an OTA software update to permit users to transfer "movable" apps to their microSD card.
Not surprised NOOK is killing off the NOOK Video service. They made a half-hearted effort to promote it when it was first introduced and offered a few Free Fridays videos as part of that campaign, but that push was short-lived.
NOOK VIDEO FAQS:

After April 30, 2016, NOOK will no longer support the playback of your purchased NOOK Videos on the NOOK Video app or compatible NOOK devices.
To continue accessing and viewing your digital movies and TV shows, you will need to migrate your video content to CinemaNow and/or Disney Movies Anywhere. You may begin migrating your NOOK Video content starting on April 4, 2016.
You may need to delete NOOK Videos that have been downloaded locally on your device or on a micro SD card manually.
