Cases do have protective benefits, but the primary reasons I always use one are that it makes the device more comfortable to hold (cases generally have some "give" in them, which is easier on the hands than the hard metal/plastic of the device), and that it protects the screen from dust, scratches, when not in use. Same reason I always close my laptop when I'm not using it.
