Alfred Basil Lubbock, British sailor, yachtsman and marine author, was born on the 9th of September 1876 and died at Monks Orchard, Blatchington, Sussex on the 3rd September 1944. He was educated at Eton and joined the Klondyke Gold Rush in the late 1890s.
He went on to San Francisco where, in 1899, he signed on as an "Ordinary Seaman" on the four mast barque "Rossshire" (referred to in his book as the "Royalshire") in order to return to England. The voyage would take him round Cape Horn.
The book "Round the Horn before the mast" was based on that voyage.
