I suspect that many of us follow this scheme. After constructing the sixth bookcase for me, hubby declared that was enough for any house. Most shelves are two books deep, and I still have two LARGE stacks (visualize books being used as building cubes in Minecraft) of books. Two because they are in different rooms. Each stack is against a wall, using the wall to support the side of the stack. Each stack is about 10 books long, and about chest height. Spines out, of course, so I can find a book when I'm looking for it.
