I have bought about 12 ebooks from WH Smiths(most during their 50% off sale) and had no trouble buying and downloading PDF and Epub titles with Adobe DE and I only use Firefox.
I know that it won't let you proceed to checkout unless all address lines are filled out prior to checkout which is a bit odd.
