It might be okay, but I'm not sure you'll be able to make a judgement about it from a screen shot.

I did view PDFs on my 1st generation Fire (same screen properties as the new Fire 7), but not the type of PDFs your son wants to use. I don't have it any more or I'd try posting a screen shot.

D&D PDFs, from what I gather, are designed to print out on 8.5x11" paper, have tiny text and graphics, so may not be readable viewing full page on a 7" screen with only 162ppi pixel density. But if you're willing to zoom and pan a bit (or view partial page zoom-to-width in landscape orientation) it is probably workable. A dedicated PDF app like EZ-PDF or Adobe Reader will give you more options than reading them with the Kindle app.

If it is an option, I would just get one and try it out.
