Sure there is an advantage.
I'm going to renew Prime - it will cost me $100.
I can run it through a gift card first to earn the extra $5 + my rewards points or I can just use my rewards credit card and get rewards points.

I'm still spending the same $100 regardless of method I choose. There is no lost opportunity to earn rewards points, they just get earned sooner by loading the gift card.
