Could be worried what answers the device will give in certain situations. Could be anything that would offend someone's sensibilities. If they have no control over the responses, they don't want the device.
Texas Instruments had the Speak and Spell, and Speak and Read 30 years ago.
The answers were preprogrammed and totally respectable, but in this day and age even dinosaurs can enrage certain people.
