Even though a battery replacement is probably doable on a 505, I really suggest getting a new(er) reader. The screens have gotten much better--with or without front light. I have an aging 505--hasn't been used in quite a while, but I do charge it up every once in a while. The screens on my other readers, including my old Sony PRS 650 have so much better contrast, that I'd hate to have to go back to the 505 as my main reader. YMMV, but I also find the touch screen to be very handy--not necessarily for turning pages, but for navigating menus and dictionary look up, etc.
