So, The Aeronaut's Windlass did improve after what I found to be a stale opening. I don't know if I would have stuck with it much past the duel if not for Butcher's name on the cover. It ended up being fun, but not a standout among Butcher's work or comparable works by other authors. In particular, it's hard for me not to compare Windlass poorly with the Temeraire series, which handles both its aeronautics and its honorable-to-a-fault protagonists with a bit more depth. Butcher's characters and world were still feeling shallow and a bit on the nose at the end of the book.
