What's left:

1. "It was a dark and stormy night."

7. "In that pleasant district of merry England which is watered by the river Don, there extended in ancient times a large forest, covering the greater part of the beautiful hills and valleys which lie between Sheffield and the pleasant town of Doncaster."

8. "Roger, aged seven, and no longer the youngest of the family, ran in wide zigzags, to and fro, across the steep field that sloped up from the lake to Holly Howe, the farm where they were staying for part of the summer holidays."

11. "Claudia knew that she could never pull off the old-fashioned kind of running away."

13. "'Where's Papa going with that axe?' said Fern to her mother as they were setting the table for breakfast."

17. "The Browns have become illustrious by the pen of Thackeray and the pencil of Doyle, within the memory of the young gentlemen who are now matriculating at the universities."

18. "Way out at the end of a tiny little town was an old overgrown garden, and in the garden was an old house, and in the house lived xxxx xxxx."

19. "On a bright December morning long ago, two thinly clad children were kneeling upon the bank of a frozen canal in Holland."

As ever, people have gotten some I thought tougher and missed out on easier ones, at least easier to me!
