Well, my PRS T1/2 does have it and it works very effectively. Maybe it mixes whites with blacks to give greys or less greys. Don't know the technology. Don't really care.
Kobo also gives contrast option but not for pdfs. Sony is one of few devices that give brightness and contrast control for pdfs.
