How old are these lamps?
No dimmers but one is a 3-way that I know wouldn't work.

I pushed the tongue up a little but no change. I didn't try the adapter because the bulb wouldn't fit under the wire bracket that holds the shade.

Since the lamps are about 12-15 years old, the problem is most likely energy supply as DT said. It's not worth buying new lamps so save a few watts.
