I think the only real way to fix the problem for the homescreen would be to add some better covers to the books. Calibre is useful for doing this.
You can avoid the homescreen most of the time though, as you can go directly to the library view from a book instead of going to the homescreen first.
But for those times you end up at the homescreen, if you have the library tile on the homescreen then it is only one tap to go from homescreen to library. (Using the library tile will show the library sorted by most recent first, which is usually the same order as the book covers appear on the homescreen.)
