Go to Settings, Library Settings, and uncheck the box for "Show thumbnail images in list view" and see if you don't like that better.
I always have good, clean images that are easy to see though. It's a normal step for me when I add a book to Calibre, to make sure the book has an image I like and a different one for each book, even for public domain books.
