Well...as it has been said, the new homepage can be turned off so
In fact, because I had recommendations turned off on the older firmware, when I updated I had a little pop up on my screen that said something along the lines "you have recommendations turned off so the new style home page won't be displayed. Go to settings if you want to change this."
