It's only covered under warranty for the first year. After that, Amazon might offer you a discount on a refurbished model to replace it, but they won't replace it for free.
If buying second hand on ebay for example, you just need to make sure you are buying it from someone with high feedback ratings, and also use Paypal to pay for it so you have some comeback.
Buying new is probably worth it though as long as you can afford it. And as you can buy a basic Kindle without the light for £60 it's not a huge outlay.
