The Egoist (1879) is a comic romantic tragedy by George Meredith (1828-1909). The plot centers around marital shenanigans in Victorian England. Wikipedia says that it "dramatizes the difficulty contingent upon being a woman in Victorian society, when women's bodies and minds are trafficked between fathers and husbands to cement male bonds" and describes it as "the turning point in Meredith's career." Even the chapter titles are pretty amusing.
