It's important to market to your niche audience and become visible in your target community. As readership grows, your best advertising will come from fellow bloggers who mention you in their posts and link to your site.
I've also noticed that the blogs that hold my interest are topic specific and they stay on-topic. If I know that every Wednesday the blogger is going to post a list of helpful hints, instructions, or some other information that interests me, then I'm likely to visit that blog on a regular basis.
