Indeed; you need to have a working Linux-system and you need to setup, test and secure the software yourself. That's why it's called OwnCloud

(Maybe it's also a reference to the fact that you own it yourself.)

If you sync files through your cloud, you might actually delete all the copies at once

If you need to get a file back using a device that should still have it, don't forget to unplug the system from the internet before starting....

If you want to create your own cloud without having to go from scratch, you could also look into one of the NAS-systems such as those made by Synology. Their lower end NAS-es are not much more expensive than setting up your own Brix/Linux combo, and you have a finished, working, tested and supported product. They have cloud storage and apps, nowadays, as well as HTTP, FTP, and other services.
