The column might work because it is 'Like Tags" US, GB (I used country codes)

What that does not indicate is Which author is US and Which is GB

Again, custom columns entries always belong to the BOOK

The Authors Link is the only way to have the information apply to the Author.
The issue is that information is not available to the templates (and the book).

Think of it as a sticky-note on the box of books by a single author name
