And - thank you - I will now....
I uninstalled totally - used an App cleaner and checked it just to make sure. I also deleted that hidden file again in the user folder and restarted. When I checked for a new downloader - I noticed 2.50.1 was out, so I downloaded and installed. Got the Apple verifier and........ it froze again! I checked the Console and was getting a zillion (bit of an exaggeration) of this message:
1/30/16 11:30:52.000 PM kernel[0]: CoreServicesUIAg[663] Unable to quarantine: 93
SO - ran the debug -g command in Terminal and got this:
calibre 2.50.1 isfrozen: True is64bit: True
Darwin-13.4.0-x86_64-i386-64bit Darwin ('64bit', '')
('Darwin', '13.4.0', 'Darwin Kernel Version 13.4.0: Wed Mar 18 16:20:14 PDT 2015; root:xnu-2422.115.14~1/RELEASE_X86_64')
Python 2.7.9
OSX: ('10.9.5', ('', '', ''), 'x86_64')
At least I finally got SOMETHING with that command!
So - it's true it's frozen... anybody know why? Clearly, I'm running it in 64 bit, and it's a 64 bit OS. I'm gonna try to run it as 32bit and see what it does...
But, perhaps this sheds more light?
That CoreServices thing is weird, right?
oh - and nope.... no 32 bit option like in old versions...
