Like you, I wish that I could add a custom Column to Parent tables (Authors, Series, Publishers) These are the 'proper' place in a 1-M Relational model.

Table: Series.Description for a summary of the Series (not book), series.Characterlist

Table:Authors.pen-names (1-M), Authors.bio ....
Table: Publisher.parent (I currently use Publisher for the IMPRINT not the owner)

Custom columns only belong to the Book Title level.

But why not use the Authors link to point to a FILE
ex
