Probably not a good idea even start a Thomas Hardy book if you don't want anything bad to happen to the protagonist. One thing you can be certain of with Hardy is that the protagonist will not "live happily ever after" . He or she will end up miserable, depressed, dead, or some combination of the above.

For goodness sake don't read Hardy's "Jude the Obscure". Has to be the most depressing book ever written .
