I've been trying to figure out what is causing the issue with AZW3, but haven't had much luck so far. Have you tried using the KindleUnpack option instead? I hadn't thought of that until just now, but I would not be surprised at all if my unpacker isn't working properly with AZW3s.
I had a similar issue with using the new mobi format on the PW1. Books converted as 'new' wouldn't open, with no real explanation. Hopefully someone else might be able to shed some light on that one.
