I've used this company multiple times to scan books of dead authors whose books I would like to read. I have vision damage and can't read paperbacks. I chose dead authors because, in general, if none of their books have shown up yet in ebook, the chances of them showing up are zilch. In many cases, they are permanently backlisted, orphaned or there are no heirs to follow up (I know, bad grammar). In a couple of cases, I had cookbooks with broken spines scanned because they could not be purchased on the used market at reasonable prices and were unusable in the damaged condition. For the novels though, I use ABBYY Transformer to convert to epub. It's not as good as Finereader, but does a doable job.
Note: 1dollarscan does NOT scan any books published by McMillian so don't even ask. Even if you live outside of the US, they have methods that you can say, buy a used book at Amazon and have it shipped to 1dollarscan's offices. Then you download the book from your account. It's explained at the website.
