Thank you David. I have rarely posted in this forum, but am speechless at the wonderful support that you have given to me and many others over the years. It's really appreciated.

You confirmed my suspicion that the signout option was only offered later, and I don't think the Kobo app will make any difference. I've always had irritating aspects of my device, so when I found the right firmware I stayed there a couple of years ago - and have enjoyed many books since.

I got 2 different error messages for the compress. One (I think) along the lines of 'database full' and another relating to 'database locked'.

The problem started after I added around 100 books to an 800 book collection which has been static for years. It will probably be a challenge working out how to identify the new books (although Calibre may help), and a previous database backup will be way out of date. Grrr.

Thanks for your advice David. It looks like I'll need to think about identifying the route of least pain. With luck it will be another couple of years before I bother you again!
