Can't speak to the Golden ones, but in all the copies of The Adventure of the COPPER Beeches (

) I can find, Watson's line right before the quoted text of the letter reads:
"It was dated from Montague Place upon the preceding evening, and ran thus: "
Yeah, I know some people are REALLY into the authenticity of stuff like that. Anything that seems like it has a passable British accent passes muster for me. I wouldn't know Victorian from Edwardian.
