Did you verify serial parameters? I think it was 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity

Try pressing different keys (several consecutive times each) and see if the gibberish that you receive in return follows a pattern. If you post the sequence of keypresses and the chars received after each keypress we might find something.

If there is no pattern in the gibberish, then I'd suspect wrong voltages or noisy cable.
