If it's broken, you are supposed to only get $5. The bonus is just encouragement to buy another kindle. All 3 of mine work - using them as recently as last week. One has some troubles with the wifi, but they are intermittant. The other two work fine, but I'm sure their batteries are aging out. As mentioned, I think they give them away after testing them. As with the cola wars, you get a specific brand device into their hands and that is what they are likely to stick with.
