Well the hope would be competition pushed the price down.

Secondarily the devices would, one would think, need to be cheaper, or else better, to compete in places where Sony's device is available, given Sony is a "safer" brand (should be better customer services, product quality less likely to be variable, would have more to lose if the above weren't the case).

I don't "know" the prices that's why that's one thing I'm asking but in terms of scuttlebutt and hearsay, now likely outdated

I can't seem to locate a price for Onyx, and NotesNote isn't at that point yet (and thus only has the guess made in the post above).

The hope would also then be that Sony too look to compete on price, against the newer devices in a manner they aren't really obliged to with a monopoly.

As noted above part of the problem is Sony's limited release, which means getting one in some places means necessarily paying a fair bit more than the already expensive official price.
