My guess it is just applying the latest patches to the underlying Android system (KitKat), which cost them almost zero development time (since the work is done at Google), and nothing more than that. If they failed to pass along security fixes to their customers (at least one of which is included with this update), it might leave them liable for something.

I appreciate that they are keeping up with this, minor though it may be. It took nearly the better part of a year for my other Android phone to get an update that eliminated the Stage Fright vulnerabilities, following the public disclosure. While these weren't exploited in the wild to any degree, it represented an 'existential' security concern, almost without precedent in terms of the number of devices affected and the ease with which it could be delivered: someone could take over a phone by sending an SMS message that subsequently got opened, that is to say, if people were just using their phone in a normal way.
