One of my big targets in cutting down overbuying is not to buy too deep into a series. Only buy the next book. If there's an unread book you already own between you and the bargain, then don't buy it. This is doubly important if you haven't even started the series, and don't know if you'll like it.
It's a good idea in principle, but so far 3 of my 6 acquisitions in 2016 have been sequels to books I haven't read yet. In fact series I haven't started yet. I bought a whole 2-book series earlier in the year (used paperbacks, from an author I've wanted to read for a while but who isn't well supported with ebooks in the UK (Carol Berg)), and I've just been tempted by low prices into buying books 2 and 3 of a highly-recommended quartet where I bought book 1 in December. Ah well. It's still early days. I can make it up...
