There is no difference in difficulty for majority of people to opt out of a OS or a search engine's unwanted data collection.

eschwartz did say that if you don't want to use google then use a different search engine that doesn't track you, in fact he specifically mentioned
DuckDucKGo, not quite sure what else you are after.
In the main I agree with him, an OS stored on My computer in My house shouldn't automatically try and grab data from me. After removing the cloud synch and turning off all the available data grab options I was very surprised to find out that half of them had turned back on after a forced update.
