Your tl;dr exactly. Especially as they (MS) first said that the sniffing is essential for maintaining functionality and thus not to be completely turned off but THEN said, enterprise customers will be able to do just that. If pro customers can live without then it's everything but not essential. I already thought it's fishy when I read that even pirated copies will be updated.
TANSTAAFL. It's far beyond fishy. They could run a 'sponsored by SeaLife' banner. As someone already said (afair regarding FB and such): "People receiving services in exchange for their data are not a company's customers, they are livestock." That's why they try to shove that 'update' down everybody's and his brother's throat. MS is turning the Windows user base into livestock.
An operating system should be just that.
